History
The Founding
In June 1940 America entered WWII and formed a test platoon in the U.S. Army, its purpose was to enhance the tactics and gear used by airborne. The 82nd Infantry was remodeled and the 101st was also activated in 1942. In 1943 the 11th, 13th, and 17th divisions were activated. Most units at the time consisted of parachute and glider infantry with some artillery, engineer, and support units mixed in. The basis for enhancing the airborne divisions and tactics in the U.S. Military (namely the Army) started in WWII when there was a need for soldiers who could tactically insert themselves into combat quickly and efficiently, and if needed behind enemy lines. They proved themselves then as a worthy fighting force then and still continue to do so today.
Involvement
Army paratroopers have been involved in a number of engagements throughout various wars including WWII in the Operation of Market Garden, the Battle of the Bulge, the Invasion of Germany, and during the invasion of Normandy. As well as the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, and the Global War on Terrorism, namely in the Iraq War, the War in Afghanistan, Operation Inherent Resolve, and Operation Freedom's Sentinel. Though the paratroopers may not be used in every engagement it is apparent that they are a very versatile, and very useful set of warriors that can and will be used where they are needed.
